Homes, renovations, and housing shaped through clarity, restraint, and long-term value.

A practical and grounded approach to architecture.

We design spaces that work for your life

How we approach each project

1. Design Grounded in Life

We start with people, place and the realities of daily use. Our work explores clarity, spatial relationships and how environments feel and function over time. Every project begins with listening.

2. Material Clarity

We choose materials for purpose, place and longevity. This is not about decoration, it is about understanding construction, texture and how things age. The aim is honest, enduring architecture.

3. Flexible, Transparent Process

We make decisions clear, timelines visible and communication simple. You will always understand what we are doing, why, and what comes next. Good design depends on trust.

Process

(What we do)

01

Project Position

We begin by looking closely at your home and site. This stage identifies what is working, what is not, and where the opportunity lies.

  • Site and context review

  • Spatial analysis of the existing house

  • Environmental considerations (light, orientation, ventilation)

  • Early planning diagrams and opportunities

  • Initial material and precedent direction

02

Concept Design

We explore and develop the design in stages. Starting with early options, the project is gradually refined into a clear architectural direction.

  • Multiple layout options

  • Spatial organisation and zoning

  • Circulation and flow testing

  • Early form and massing studies

  • Ongoing client review and direction setting

03

Documentation & Approvals

Once the design is resolved, we prepare drawings required for approvals and construction. Where required, this includes development applications and coordination with consultants.

  • Detailed plans and key drawings

  • Development application (if required)

  • Consultant coordination

  • Technical resolution of key elements

  • Drawings for pricing and approvals

04

Construction

We remain involved during construction to guide key decisions and maintain the intent of the design.

  • On-site advice and clarification

  • Review of key construction decisions

  • Coordination with builder and consultants

  • Design intent guidance during build

01

What services does Studio Flek offer?

Flek works across residential architecture, including houses, renovations, duplexes, townhouses, and small multi-residential projects. Our work is grounded in careful consideration of site, climate, and material, with an emphasis on durable, well-made buildings that support everyday life.

While both directors bring experience across commercial and mixed-use typologies, our current focus is on small-scale residential interventions, particularly thoughtful renovations and additions. We are interested in helping people stay where they already feel connected, or carefully adapt a new purchase to suit their family, lifestyle, and long-term needs.

Rather than designing houses that are simply larger or more elaborate, we focus on making spaces work better, through clear planning, considered structure, and a restrained palette of materials that age well. The aim is quality, comfort, and longevity, not excess.

Our services span all stages of a project, from early briefing and concept design through planning, documentation, consultant coordination, tendering, and construction support.

You can explore our approach in more detail on the Process page, and see the types of projects we take on in Services.

02

Won’t an architect design something more expensive than I want?

Not necessarily. A key part of our role is helping you understand where money is best spent and where it is not. We work within agreed budgets and focus on making deliberate decisions around layout, structure, materials, and construction methods to achieve quality without unnecessary cost.

Good design is often about restraint, clarity, and efficiency, rather than adding complexity.

03

Why do I need an architect if I already have a builder?

Builders are experts in construction, sequencing, and delivery. Architects focus on spatial planning, long-term performance, regulatory navigation, and design resolution before construction begins.

Having an architect involved early helps ensure the project is well considered, clearly documented, and coordinated, which often leads to smoother construction, fewer variations, and better outcomes for both client and builder.

04

Can’t a draftsperson do the same thing more cheaply?

Draftspersons provide valuable services, particularly for straightforward projects. An architect brings a broader scope, including site analysis, design strategy, planning controls, sustainability thinking, and consultant coordination.

For projects with complexity, tight sites, planning constraints, or long-term ambitions, this additional layer of thinking can make a meaningful difference to both the outcome and the process.

05

What if I don’t like the design you come up with?

Design is collaborative. We do not present a finished solution without discussion. Early stages involve conversations, sketches, and testing ideas to ensure the work aligns with your brief, budget, and way of living.

If something is not working, we refine it. Feedback is part of the process, not a problem.

06

Do architects only design fancy or big houses?

No. We work on a range of project scales, including modest renovations and carefully sized homes. Our interest is in thoughtful, well-resolved spaces that respond to site, climate, and daily use, regardless of size.

Quality is not defined by scale or cost.

07

What if I change my mind during the process?

Changing your mind is common, particularly in early stages. Our process is structured to allow ideas to be tested and adjusted before they become costly to change.

As the project progresses, decisions naturally become more fixed, but we aim to guide this transition clearly so expectations are understood on both sides.

08

Won’t design take too long?

Good design does take time, but it often saves time later. Clear thinking, proper documentation, and resolved decisions upfront can reduce delays, variations, and uncertainty during construction.

We structure projects in stages so progress is visible, decisions are paced, and momentum is maintained.

09

Isn’t sustainable design more expensive?

Sustainable design is not just about adding technology. Often it involves smarter orientation, simpler forms, durable materials, and reducing reliance on mechanical systems.

These decisions can lower running costs over time and improve comfort, without necessarily increasing upfront construction cost.

10

What’s your role once the drawings are done?

Depending on your needs, we can assist through tendering, builder selection, and construction support. This may include reviewing shop drawings, responding to site queries, and helping resolve issues as they arise.

Our involvement helps ensure the design intent is carried through and decisions are made with clarity during construction.
